The ACTION:
"...created and implemented a [Peace Campaign] program that promotes
kindness and respect amoung students, and generates important community-service projects. [The program] was awarded
first prize at the annual Youth Summit [on March 19, 2008] sponsored by the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater
State College, which aims to stop bullying among adolescents.
...The winning program includes two community-based
projects: fund-raising and volunteer work for Mel's Bracelets in Hingham, which benefits breast cancer research;
and creating fleece blankets for Father Bill's Place in Quincy. Students also began a 'random acts of kindness'
initiative, plus a 'clothesline project,' which gives both male and female students a platform to discuss sexual discrimination,
violence, and abuse.
... [The students] created a 4-by-6-foot poster.... [T]he poster includes symbols for peace,
green living, and a line the students say sums up their feelings about the [Peace] campaign: 'Peace does not mean
being in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means being in the midst of those things, and still
finding calm in your heart.' "
